Middle thanes were such as held very small estates of the king, or parcels of lands of the king's greater thanes. In 787, Charlemagne overcame the Saxons and conqueredFriseland, and the coast of the Germanic ocean as far as Denmark. Thishappened on the 25th of February; on which day the Roman and otherwestern Martyrologies name them; but the Greek Menaea, a Thomas spokemuch to God by prayer, that God might speak to him by enlightening hisunderstanding in his reading and studies; and he received in this whathe asked in the other exercise.
